The blue flag award is issued by the Foundation for Environmental Education which rates beaches on safety, facilities and environmental management as well as water quality. Beaches are assessed on 33 criteria on an annual basis to ensure that they maintain their standard from year to year. This prestigious international award is managed in Wales by the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy and shows that Welsh beaches are “amongst the world’s best” according to the Welsh Natural Resources Minister Carl Sargeant.
Benllech, Church Bay, Llanddona, Porth Dafarch, Llanddwyn and Trearddur Bay have achieved blue flag status on Anglesey this year. Benllech is a small holiday resort with an extensive sandy beach on the east coast of Anglesey. Church Bay is located on the west coast of Anglesey, famous for its sheltered beach, tall cliffs, historic Welsh cottage, the Wavecrest Café and Lobster Pot restaurant. Cable Cottage in the adjacent bay offers historic charm and elegant living on the edge of the beach. The Moorings (Lower Flat and Top Flat) together with luxurious Ty Lawr are at nearby, picturesque Cemaes Bay which has a broad sandy beach and a colourful old harbour.
Llanddona Beach is at the eastern end of Red Wharf Bay with spectacular views and vast, unspoilt, golden sands, no shops but a dog-friendly pub and restaurant, the Owain Glyndwr. Ben Moore is a superb barn conversion close by the sea, near picturesque Penmon Point, whilst Dinmor is an attractive chalet in tranquil surroundings close to Llanddona.
Porth Dafarch is on Holy Island off the west coast of Anglesey just outside Holyhead. It is renowned for its craggy cliffs and watersports activities such as kayaking and coasteering. Just to the south is Trearddur Bay, a small seaside town, with its secluded coves and beaches. The Old Abbey is just fifty metres from the beach with the choice of Little House and The Annexe.
The road down to Llanddwyn Beach (Traeth Llanddwyn) from Newborough village through the forest of Corsican pines leads to a stunning beach steeped in the magic and mystery of Llanddwyn Island.
